Heart

Care For the Homeless breaks down barriers by providing high-quality-patient-centered health care, regardless of one’s ability to pay.

Individuals experiencing homelessness have a higher incidence for almost all health conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, HIV, and asthma. Housing and food insecurity, being uninsured/under-insured, mental illness, and perceived social stigmas are just a few of the barriers that prevent people from accessing health services. These circumstances make health conditions more difficult to treat, dangerously exacerbate chronic issues, and ultimately prolong a person’s homelessness. Care For the Homeless breaks down these barriers by providing high-quality-patient-centered health care regardless of one’s ability to pay.

Care For the Homeless has actively advocated on behalf of people experiencing homelessness in NYC since its creation in 1985.

We actively track trends and developments, develop policy initiatives, advocate on public policy issues, and educate policy makers on important issues affecting individuals and families, who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Additionally, we work with advocacy partners and coalitions at the national, state, and local levels, advocating for high-quality-patient-centered health care, robust human services, and affordable housing opportunities. We are committed to actively involving our clients, staff, and Board in our policy and advocacy efforts as well as building public support to protect the rights and dignity of people experiencing homelessness.

Our policy and advocacy efforts provide an essential voice for people experiencing homelessness in New York City, Albany, and Washington. Recent policy newsletters, updates, and other items are available on this site.

Care For the Homeless (CFH) opened its first transitional residence in 2008 and its second in 2019.

Susan’s Place, located on Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, NY, is a 200-bed shelter, complete with a CFH-operated, onsite health center. Residents are consistently provided with a broad spectrum of primary health care and social services, as well as healthy meals, clean clothing, and recreational activities. Susan’s Place empowers women by providing them with a safe and supportive environment, enabling them to stay permanently housed once their transition is complete.

We opened the 52nd Street Women’s Center in 2019. The location is similar to Susan’s Place and will enhance the reach of our mission to end homelessness.
