Anisha, a medical case manager at CFH, is constantly
amazed by her clients, the homeless who live on the street.
“They’re so resourceful,” she says. “Once
I asked one of my clients how he stayed warm. He explained the layers
of newspaper, cardboard and sleeping bags.”
Anisha has been with CFH for more than seven years, and working
with the street homeless is her passion.
“What keeps me going are the clients. I was born to help rebuild
and change lives. I love working with my families or street homeless
and seeing them progress.”
She holds her “office hours” at soup kitchens in Manhattan
and her clients, who are mostly male, come to her for a quick fix
like an ID card. Some come to her for ongoing support such as finding
a place to live and her goal is to create whatever stability is
possible.
For Anisha, success is a second or third request for help because
that means she’s established trust. She became a social worker
to help others and she’s found a people group that need her
desperately.
“I have learned that any step that a client takes in a positive
direction means everything. Sometimes you can see them make changes
from A to Z other times it maybe from A to C. However; any progress
means that the client and counselor relationship is impacting them
in some way.”
Anisha is proud to be a part of CFH because she says CFH brings
their service directly to the client, a service that many places
don’t offer.
“The street homeless are a vulnerable population but they
have a lot of strengths and survival skills. They just need one
person to say, ‘You’ve been through a lot, but you’re
still here.’”
